By Julian Hall There can be much unhappiness, depression ill health and stress which can be brought on by bad working conditions & unfair working practices. In many cases, there are good grounds for claiming compensation for stress at work For example: Unrealistic service levels or deadlines at work causing stress and depression The rise in sexual discrimination can lead to stress and depression at work An unclean work environment stress and depression at work The fear of continual racist abuse causing stress and depression at work Not allowing necessary breaks from work can often cause stress and depression at work Employees who become depressed at work through stress, they deserve to claim compensation What is stress? HSE defines stress as "the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them". Pressure is part and parcel of all work and helps to keep us motivated . But excessive pressure can lead to stress which undermines performance, is costly to employers and can make people ill. Why do we need to tackle stress? about half a million people in the UK experience work-related stress at a level they believe is making them ill; up to 5 million people in the UK feel "very" or "extremely" stressed by their work; and a total of 12.8 million working days were lost to stress, depression and anxiety in 2004/5. Employers should look at: developing appropriate and effective policy organising a risk assessment and benchmarking exercise developing appropriate training for managers and staff developing support structures and services as needed Bullying at work can be grounds for compensation There are many more causes of employee stress and depression at work. However there is some good news. You could be entitled to reasonable compensation if you are suffering stress and depression at work or have been forced to resign from work because of undue stress which has led to depression. **************************************************************** If you need advice or would just like to speak to someone, please dont hesitate to give Claims Master Group a call on 08000 71 22 71. Online Dating Questions Not to Ask - Part 3
By Peter Portero Everyone who meets someone online is excited about getting to know them better. If there is a connection, you want to know right away. You should avoid asking a thousand questions however and stick to general topics at first. If you do start asking questions, even though you are not trying to, you might seem overbearing. You need to be patient and take things slowly. This will ensure that you create a natural environment in which you can evaluate if you have a connection or not. Personal Questions Stay away from asking personal questions. You can ask about your dates family or friends, but dont even think about asking about personal family issues or things like that. Anything personal your date wants to reveal is fine, but dont try to pry. You should seem interested, but not crazy! So, be sure to keep the conversation on personal issues very general. Ask about their job, their favorite things, and what they love to do in their spare time. This will be a good place to start. Physical Questions If you have not met each other yet, you might want to be careful about how many physical questions you ask your online date. You may ask for a photo, but dont try to ask them their weight or height. Anything you cant determine in the photo, you will see for yourself when you meet. If you start asking really in depth physical questions, your date will only think you are shallow. Peter Portero also contributes dating research to a UCLA research study on online matrimonials site called Shaadi Bliss. What's Love Got To Do With It? Five Do's And Don'ts Women Want Their Men To Know
By Constance Weygandt When women get together and talk about the men in their lives, there are reoccurring themes that usually end with someone saying, "Why do they do that ?" "They", of course, being men in general and their man in particular. For this Valentines Day, I thought I would share five dos and donts that invariably come up in a conversation about men. Do Kiss. This is the number 1 secret that men need to know. Keep It Simple Stupid. It really is the little things, done consistently, that will melt our hearts. Some examples would be: clean out the dishwasher without being asked, make us a cup of coffee or tea in the morning, pick up after us once in awhile. Do not keep a running tally in your brain of what you have done for us. Cooking dinner for us, dressed in a pair of cute boxer shorts, with an expectant look on your face is not exactly subtle, guys. For all the men that have done this, you know who you are. There is nothing that will throw cold water on a hot night faster than having your woman feel she owes you for a simple act of kindness. Do romance us. On Valentines Day, instead of stopping on your way home from work to pick up flowers and a card, go to a florist a few days before. Pick a stem of your girls favorite blossom and have it delivered with a note which reads, "The perfection of this reminded me of you." We like corny, sentimental mush. Do not have your secretary, sister, mother, or God forbid - your girlfriend, pick out a gift for us. I think this one is self-explanatory. Do laugh with us. Women often state, when asked what qualities they look for in a man, "a sense of humor". You are probably thinking that we say that but what we really fantasize about is a hunk and you would be right. However, we will forgive almost anything in a man who makes us laugh. Do not take yourself too seriously. Dont only talk about your work, your needs, your likes and dislikes. Give us equal time to share our dreams with you. Do listen. I know this is a hard one for most men. We are aware that after the first five minutes of conversation, when that glazed look comes over you, that we have lost you. However, we want you to pretend to be interested. If we tell you about a tic that dear Aunt Sally has and our concern that it may be hereditary, make a mental note of it and ask us about it a few days later. You get huge points for this one. Do not tell us that Valentines Day is just another excuse for big business to make money and that you dont feel you should contribute to the commercialization of it. I actually had a male friend who shared this opinion with his wife. The only response I could think of was," Gee. That extra y chromosome doesnt help you much, does it ?" Do buy us jewelry. When all else fails, we like jewelry. It gives us bragging rights. Do not buy us a hammer, toaster or a membership to a gym on Valentines Day. A rule of thumb on this one would be : On Valentines Day, if what you are thinking of buying us has any use at all, dont do it. I hope these little insights into a womans mind are helpful. This Valentines Day try one or two of the dos. Who knows? You may be able to retire those boxer shorts. Constance Weygandt is a speaker, author and balance mentor. Rock stars
By Karl Giberson Scientists around the world are waiting for a Halloween goodie bag from NASA and unlike Charlie Brown, who would lament that he got a rock these recipients could not possibly be more excited as they anticipate the arrival of their rocks. NASAs rocks are from outer space, collected by the wildly successful Stardust mission, launched seven years ago to gather comet debris. Stardust landed in January in a Utah desert. The capsule visited Comet Wild 2, a relatively recent arrival in the region of our solar system between Mars and Jupiter. In passing near this comet, Stardusts aerogel collectors swept up material being ejected from the comet and brought it back to Earth. It is the most adventurous treasure hunt our species has ever conducted a 2.9 billion-mile odyssey to gather a most impressive treasure. Wild 2 is interesting because until recently it lived in the Kuiper Belt, a vast assemblage of comets orbiting way beyond Pluto, so far from our sun that almost no heat reaches them. In the icy recesses of the Kuiper Belt comets do little more than drift lazily about the sun no long tails stream behind them, carrying away their surface material, erasing the telltale clues to their origins. Astronomers believe that Kuiper Belt comets are perfectly preserved fossils from the early days of our solar system silent, unreachable eyewitnesses to the birth of our cosmic home. Because the Kuiper Belt is so far away, visiting it is out of the question. But Comet Wild 2 got pulled by Jupiters gravity into a much closer orbit, essentially inviting us to meet it halfway, which NASA was only too willing to do. And, because Wild 2 had only been in our neighborhood for a short time, the increased heat from the sun had not had time to melt or otherwise disturb its primordial surface. The rocks embedded in Stardusts aerogel may have a truly interesting story to tell our story of how our solar system came to be. How did our planet get so rich in chemicals, from carbon to uranium, when these are astonishingly rare in our universe, making up a tiny fraction of its matter? Where did the building blocks of life on Earth come from? What kind of star exploded in this part of the Milky Way billions of years ago, creating the disc of interstellar material out of which our solar system formed? Why is there so much life-sustaining water on the Earth? Missions like Stardust generally return little more than information for the billions of dollars it costs to run them. And those billions come from U.S. taxpayers. But surely they are worth every penny if they help us create the rich story of our origins. Scientists believe, for good reasons, that all the varied atoms in our bodies were once inside a star. These atoms were fused from hydrogen that dates from the beginning of the universe. The star exploded, spreading these atoms across a great region of space in a gigantic cloud. Gravity pulled them into larger clumps a central sun, planets, comets, moons, asteroids. And on one of the balls that gravity made a special place called Earth life appeared. If we can spend millions of dollars on government reports trying to piece together the story of what happened at Whitewater, or who knew what before Sept. 11, then surely we can spend a few times that on our own grander story.
