By Foras Aje I had stated in a previous article how Yoga could work as a natural depression treatment based on my own experiences. To add to that information-being a very important limb of Yoga into itself- what you eat also has an effect on your mental health. Consequently, if youre interested in a drug-free treatment of depression, without the side-effects common to most depression medications, a crucial step will be to make some dietetic changes amongst other factors. However, what should be the main priority, to avoid adding insult to injury when using depression medications, will ironically be avoiding their use considering the many side effects common to these anti-depression drugs. Effective as they may be for a while, its been noted that these substances have several side effects which may include nausea, fatigue, insomnia and some sexual dysfunctions. In some cases on mental side effects, mania has even been reported; so needless to say, a drug free depression treatment might be your best AND safest bet for your health. Now, when in depression, most of us have the tendency to binge in an effort to mask our feelings or deaden the pain, some of us go as far as soliciting the use of alcohol, drugs or even sex for depression help. Yes, they may give some relief for a while, but when these mere distractions wear off, the symptoms of depression always do come back, and with a vengeance. This considered, it will be safe to say the first step of a dietetic factor in regards to depression treatment could be refraining from food, at least for a while friends, really.
An observance of nature will show us that when animals are frightened or angered, they refrain from eating until after the passage of considerable time. It is true that under stressful circumstances many civilized people refrain from eating and find in truth that they lack the desire for food, but it is also too often that most will eat large meals under these circumstances, which will be mostly disease forming foods to start with, that as a consequence, complicates or altogether halts an already retarded ongoing digestion. This endless cycle leads to even more toxins and poisons in an already encumbered body. So what are you saying Foras (thats my name by the way), I should fast or something? Well, if you can, that will be excellent. At least till your emotional balance returns, which will be the end result as the body is not taxed with the duties of digestion, assimilation and re-building. Your mind clears and all moroseness disappears and consequently, we tend to find the answers to the problems warranting a treatment for depression in the first place. Now for many, I agree it might be asking for too much to fast during a stressful time based on old habits, but as an alternative, it will be advisable to steer clear of harmful mucus forming foods and partake of body healing ones: Fruits and Vegetables. A restricted diet of one kind of fruit can be considered a camouflaged fasts but you have to be knowledgeable of its season, how it was grown (organically or conventional) and even when to eat as body cleansing and building do occur at specific times of the day. Now, not to get of the subject of depression treatment, these steps, be they a fast or a healthier diet, will ensure that the body is cleaner and well we all should know by now that a cleaner body equates to a cleaner mind. In fact Yoga sages (this obviously showing my vote of Yoga for anti-depression) suggest that certain foods, which they coin as rajasic (stimulating foods including Spices, alcohol, and animal products) foods have a negative stimulating effect on the nervous and endocrine systems, the two main ones that are related to mental health and consequently depression. Based on their impeccable analysis of the human body, it may be safe to say these old Yoga Sages are completely right in suggesting we as humans-or at least those of us seeking the use of Yoga for depression treatment-should abstain from these foods for optimal success. Is it a co-incidence that these same foods are the ones that have been shown to wreak havoc on our physical health? I think not folks. This considered, instead of introducing chemical substances into your body in a quest for seeking depression treatment, from the facts above, it will be wise to first make a dietetic change, which again may include a short fast, at least to clear our minds first to tackle our problems, then eat the proper foods for nourishment and of course partake in some physical exercise (my choice being some Yoga) to obtain the inevitable feel-good results. Depression is something we all may go through at some point, but thankfully relief and a successful treatment of it is not out of reach and this without harmful side-effects. So empower yourself to a successful depression treatment targeting its root cause with drug-free methods of healing. On the subject of diet and depression treatment, I choose to remind you of this quote: Let your foods be your medicine and your medicine your foods (By Hippocrates the Father or Medicine) May happiness be yours. A Scrapbook Page To Celebrate Your Child's First Haircut
By Nigel Patterson Here's a great idea for making a special 'first haircut' scrapbook page. Between the ages of about 12 and 18 months, a baby boy or girl may go for their first hair cut. You've probably seen that there are many children's hair salons that offer special deals for a child's first visit. They have a special chair, take a photo or even video the visit -- and then later you take away the photo or video and a lock of hair as a keepsake. So why not create a scrap book page to celebrate this event in a special way! Here are some tips to give the page a fresh angle. And of course these ideas could be re-worked for all kinds of different kids' scrapbook projects. Use Homemade Paper For a unique background, try using homemade paper. You can make your own customized paper of any color and texture you want. This takes a bit of time and effort. Alternatively, try soaking a piece of card-stock. After a few minutes, crumple the paper a bit and then iron it flat again. This will closely approximate the appearance of homemade paper. Painted Tissue Paper Painted tissue paper can add a colorful flair to your child's 'first haircut' scrapbook page. To paint tissue paper, punch or tear bits of tissue paper into various shapes. Then, using watercolor pencils and a wet paintbrush, thoroughly coat the tissue paper. Now dip the painted tissue paper in a mixture of scrapbook glue and water and place it on white card-stock. Let the pieces dry completely. Use the dry colored tissue paper as a background, a border, or as a fancy embellishment. Beading Beads are another way to add color and design to the page. Beading can be as simple as gluing a few beads onto a scrapbook page or as complex as a sewn beaded design. When arranged in an abstract pattern, they can create a child-like effect -- or place them carefully to make a fun title or artistic design. Beads, micro-beads, and necklaces can be attached using two-sided tape or Xyron adhesive. Make a Pocket If you've kept a lock of your child's hair, why not store it in a pocket? Pockets allow you take out and put back items as you see fit and replace them without damage to your scrapbook page. The easiest pocket is simply an envelope. But pockets can also quickly and easily made by folding a piece of paper in half and then gluing three of the side edges. Pockets can also be made from pieces of fabric sewn together. In this way, pockets can be virtually any texture, color, and weave to suit your required needs. There are so many events in a child's life that you can celebrate with your scrapbooking. From first haircuts to birthday parties, holidays and school celebrations, you can use your scrapbooking expertise to preserve the memories for years to come. The Quickest Weight Loss System
By Jason Johns Stop eating! Yeah thats the quickest weight loss system on the planet. Stop eating and your weight will just magically disappear and before you know it you will be a starving, slender shadow of your former self. Really? Nope, that is a HUGE lie of epic proportions. Its not true. Its blatantly dishonest, and its plain old wrong. The quickest weight loss system has nothing to do with stopping eating. The quickest weight loss system is nothing but a myth. Im sorry to say that losing weight requires work and effort and that quick weight loss will damage your physical body. When you stop eating and dramatically reduce your calorie intake, your body reacts in a way it has been programmed to through evolution. As soon as your calorie intake is significantly reduced, your body thinks a famine is coming. This means it starts to store fat and put weight on to ensure you survive the famine. And storing fat and gaining weight is not what your weight loss program is about, is it? This is why a lot of people struggle when they start a weight loss program. They cut down their food intake and their body piles on the pounds to survive the famine. Instead what you need to do is cut down your calorie intake whilst increasing your exercise levels. This will ensure your body burns the fat stored within your body and that you can actually lose weight and keep it off. It is when you diet and exercise that you really get results from your weight loss program. If you only diet, or if you only exercise, then you will find that your weight loss is not as quick as you may want it to be. When you begin your weight loss program, it is important that you decide upon an exercise plan that suits you. Not everyone enjoys the gym nor wants to go every day. What forms of exercise do you enjoy and want to do? Remember, exercise includes walking, climbing the stairs, cleaning the house, going shopping. Anything that keeps you active is classed as exercise. The more ways you can include exercise into your daily routine, the more weight loss you will experience. One of my favorites is taking the stairs instead of the elevator when I am out. This ensures I get some nice free exercise and burn some extra calories. If you want to experience quick weight loss, then you need to combine a sensible and smart eating program with a workable exercise plan. The two together will ensure you have quick weight loss. Web Sales Can Increase Your Crafting Revenue
By N Goyette Think of an ideal craft show for a moment thousands of people coming through the turnstiles at the fairgrounds or the exhibition areas with money in their hands and an intense desire to spend it. What about having a million people with access to your crafts at a craft show - at any time they wanted. That would really be IDEAL! At a typical craft show, you are going to see hundreds, and maybe a couple thousand people visiting over any given weekend. Some shows are bigger than others, but even with 2,000 people coming through the gates, how many of them are stopping and looking at your booth with the intention of buying? It can vary. If you could somehow increase the number of people that stop by your booth, it makes sense that you could increase your sales, right? Have you thought of a website for your crafts? This is the ultimate craft show - millions of people can access your information and your products, and you have limited set up fees - and orders can be placed while you are sleeping snug in your bed at night. Putting together a good website for your crafts takes a little bit of effort to get off the ground, but it might be well worth the work. Here's what you have to do: " Design a site - You can probably find someone to give you a hand with this, and it doesn't have to be very elaborate looking - just enough to show pictures of your crafts, their prices, a little bit about you etc. It is important to make sure that you set the site up with a secure credit card payment system, as this will aid in a greater number of sales, just like in a regular craft show. " Find a host - All sites need a web host in order to post them on the Internet. There are hundreds of providers out there, and you just need to find the one that is right for you. Chances are you have a friend or acquaintance that has a website, and they may be able to help you with on for your crafts. " Drive traffic to the website - This can be done any number of ways: articles like this one, having others link to your site, update your pages regularly so your pages are indexed by search engines like Google and Yahoo! Coming up with the right keywords for your crafts is important for when people are searching the Internet for the type of craft you make. " Maintain the site - I would suggest updating your crafting website at least once every two weeks, and maybe even once a week if you have time. This provides a certain amount of confidence for web buyers that your craft site up alive and well! While having a website can certainly boost your sales, the other side of the coin is that you might be inundated with orders! That's not necessarily a bad thing, except you could be working night and day to meet the orders! One way to avoid this is to post on your website how many of a certain item is available.
Remember imagining a craft show where millions of people came in and they had money to spend on crafts? Now you have it albeit a virtual craft show. The sky is the limit when you are talking about selling your crafts on the Internet. With the right presentation, the right price and with the right traffic driven to your site, you can open the doors to your crafts for millions of people. How Adultery Statistics Affect Divorce
By Stephany Alexander Adultery statistics are hard to come by, especially honest and controlled statistics. According to the electronic article Adultery: Statistics on Cheating Spouses, published by Eagles Nest Publications, 60-70 percent of adultery victims are women while 30-40 percent of adultery victims are men. Adultery is usually one of the top reasons cited for divorce and with modern technology and readily available sex partners, it doesnt seem like this trend will slow any time soon. The definition of adultery is consensual sexual intercourse with a partner that is not your husband or wife. According to the 2003 United Nations World Fertility Reports, 89% of all women and men get married by the age of 49. However, not all marriages follow the monogamy rule. Anthropological studies have reported that 80-85% of societies allowed polygamous marriage. It is a well-known fact that the early Mormons practiced Polygamy. However, most men in societies are not able to afford multiple wives so the average societal marriage involves one man and one woman. Adultery stories have been a part of history since the beginning of time. Adultery is clearly forbidden in the seventh commandment of the Ten Commandments and is punishable by death. Jesus preached it was a sin. However, in the past, only a married woman engaging in sex with another man counted as adultery in which case both the woman and the man were considered guilty. Nevertheless, this attitude has spread to married men who are now looked down upon and may be punished by laws if they cheat on their wives. In some cultures, the punishment for adultery results in the death penalty, some penalties being as brutal has stoning the guilty party to death. In various countries adultery is illegal and in the United States adultery laws vary from state to state. When a person files for divorce on the grounds of adultery, they must provide as much proof as possible to prove the validity of the affair. If the divorce is contested, then it is up to the accusing party to provide dates, times and any other admissible evidence. Adultery can affect the negotiation of the divorce process by setting off hurt, anger and resentment. Infidelity most affects divorce in the negotiation process. Rarely does infidelity fail to set off negative and painful emotions from the cheated on party. Unfortunately, adultery seems to be a part of our society. Whether we decide to partake in it or work on trying to keep it out of our lives, it is a personal decision we choose and we must live with the consequences. Prevent Dental Stains Without Chemicals
By Charles Kassotis Do you wish your teeth were whiter? Some people have off-white teeth naturally, probably through their genetic inheritance. Others get stained teeth over time for a variety of reasons. If you would like to brighten your smile but dont want to put the time or money into commercially whitening them, here are a few suggestions for doing it on your own. 1. Limit your consumption of tea, which contains tannic acid. This substance can darken teeth gradually over time, as evidenced by the stains left in teacups used for serving this beverage. You also may want to cut back on cola products, which has a similar but lesser effect. Any foods with deep colors, like blueberries, can leave stains on your tooth enamel. So be sure to brush your teeth after eating foods like these. 2. Rinse your mouth after eating. For best results, try to rinse with water even after snacks, including pop or candy bars. This will prevent foods from sticking to or staying with your teeth, where they can adhere to the enamel and cause stains to appear gradually. At work, use the drinking fountain or bathroom sink for a quick rinse. The quicker you rinse, the better results you will have. Some people even carry small bottles of mouthwash for a quick gargle after lunch. 3. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Morning and evening are the best times, or following two of your main meals. This will help to remove food bits that can cause discoloration or decay. You can use whitening toothpaste if you prefer, which will provide a low-key brightening effect on your teeth without the use of harsh chemicals or abrasive products. Ask your dentist to recommend a safe whitener for this purpose. 4. Ask about tetracycline substitutes. If you are prescribed tetracycline, a popular antibiotic, ask the doctor if there is a reasonable substitute, as tetracycline has been known to discolor patients teeth, especially those who took it frequently or for prolonged periods of time. If you must take it, check with your dentist about how to combat the potential darkening effect it may have on your teeth. Other medications may have this effect, as well, so if tooth color is a problem, ask your doctor about the potential for discoloration for any prescription you receive, or simply inquire about those you should avoid. One alternative is to merely accept your teeth the way they are. Unless they are extremely yellow or darkened, most people will not notice them, and they should pose no particular health hazard. Another option is to try a home whitening treatment that you can do yourself. This will save money and time, but it involves a bleaching process that probably uses peroxide or another chemical. Ask your dentist about the advisability of this type of product if you are thinking of trying one. Society views white teeth as an indication of good health and wholesome hygiene, not to mention physical attractiveness, so make the most of your pearly whites. Pain Relievers and Children
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jill_L._Ferguson] Jill L. Ferguson Your five-year-old complains of a headache. What do you do? How does the medical profession recommend you treat your childs ailments and pains? With so many choices in the analgesic (painkiller) market today, choosing a pain relief medication can be a difficult and confusing task. There are pros and cons to each type of analgesic, and at least one of them may not be appropriate for children or teenagers. So, what are your options?
Acetaminophen Acetaminophen, known best by its brand names of Tylenol and Panadol, relieves mild pain and reduces fever. According to Dr. Leora Kuttner, author of A Child in Pain: How to Help, What to Do, Scientists still do not know exactly how it achieves both peripheral and central pain relief. But what they do know is that this pain killer is helpful to children who are teething, who have colds and/or influenza, sore throats, sinus pressure and fevers 102 degrees Fahrenheit and below. Acetaminophen is recommended for people who cannot take aspirin due to aspirin-related allergies, sensitive or easily irritated stomachs or ringing in the ears. Acetaminophen contains no aspirin. It is safe for use by infants, children and teenagers. A possible side effect of using acetaminophen-based products is that high doses or regular-long-term use can cause liver damage, so it should not be used by anyone with liver disease or who is anemic. Also, doctors do not recommend using Tylenol and similar products if the fever is over 102 for more than three days or for fevers that keep returning. One dose of acetaminophen (follow directions for age and weight on the bottle, and do not administer more than five times in one day) will typically last for four to six hours.
Aspirin Aspirin is classified into the family of drugs called NSAIDs or Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs. These painkillers halt the synthesis of prostaglandins (inflammatory substances) by working at the site of the pain, counteracting chemicals that promote pain transmission. Aspirin is used for relieving pain, swelling and fever in adults. It also relieves mild itching and is great for treating arthritis and other conditions. Twenty years ago, orange-flavored chewable baby aspirins were a common way to treat childhood ailments. But times have changed. Aspirin, in recent years, has been linked to a rare but serious brain and liver disorder called Reyes syndrome in children and teenagers. For this reason, doctors recommend using other analgesics for infants, children and teenagers. In addition to stomach irritation, aspirin is dangerous for people who have allergies to it, are taking blood-thinners, or have gout or ulcers. People with asthma or hearing loss may also have problems taking it.
Ibuprofen Ibuprofen, the newest analgesic on the market, is part of the NSAIDs family of drugs. The brand names include both Childrens Motrin and Childrens Advil. This drug has been available for children since 1989first as a prescription drug and then, since 1996, as an over-the-counter medication. Ibuprofen is an effective reliever of pain, fever and inflammation. This NSAID can be used to treat childrens sore throats, toothaches, earaches, fevers over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, broken bone and other injuries. Certain conditions can cause ibuprofen to have serious side effects. If a child is dehydrated during an illness, blood flow to the kidneys is decreased. Ibuprofen use also decreases the blood flow to the kidneys. For someone who is already dehydrated, taking this analgesic may further complicate his illness or cause other significant problems. Doctors also advise against using ibuprofen if the child has asthma and/or nasal polyps, stomach or intestinal disorders, a skin condition called angioedema, an aspirin allergy, liver or kidney disease, chicken pox and/or a blood clotting disorder. Studies are still be done on ibuprofen products and because of this, many doctors recommend it as a second choice in childrens pain relief. A study, whose results were discussed at the November 1997 meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, showed that ibuprofen may do its job too well and may mask symptoms. Danielle Zerr, M.D., a fellow at Childrens Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, stated, Ibuprofen is effective as an antipyretic, masking inflammation and symptoms, and delaying a trip to the physician. Zerr presented data on a necrotizing fasciitis (NFa soft tissue infection) outbreak in Washington State. Children who used ibuprofen often had masked the beginning of secondary symptoms, delaying appropriate treatment. But other studies have found ibuprofen to be safe and effective for treating certain pains in children. Ibuprofen should only be taken with meals or milk, and bottle or box directions should be consulted for proper dosage according to the childs weight and age. Avoid giving this product to children under the age of six months. Ibuprofens effects last for six to eight hours, and should not be given for more than three consecutive days without a doctors approval. How to Protect Your Child Communicate with the childs other caretakers to avoid unintentional over-medicating.
Refrain from giving aspirin to your child of any age.
Avoid giving an infant ibuprofen.
Be aware of the products dosage, paying strict attention to the words extra-strength and regular strength. Infants liquid painkiller often has a higher concentrate than the childrens version.
If your child has a high fever (over 102) or has any swelling, and is not aspirin-allergic, some brand of ibuprofen may be your best choice of pain reliever.
Always consult your doctor if you are unsure about proper dosage, which analgesic to give your child, or if you have any questions. Jill L.
Jill L. Ferguson is an author, editor, public speaker, consultant and professor. She has written over 700 published articles, essays and poems. Knowledge Of Grammar Resulting On Better Writing
By Sharon White Until the 1960's the vast majority of schools in England, and at that
other parts of the traditional English speaking world such as the US,
Canada, Australia and New Zealand, taught grammar in schools.
Deemed by some academics as pointless it was found that by 1980 the
tradition of teaching grammar had disappeared in state funded
comprehensive schools. In the 1960's many reports were published which stated that the
teaching of grammar does not benefit children's abilities to write in
fact some research material adversely claimed that grammar had a
detrimental affect on children. In fact according to Dick Hudson from the University of Central London
a list of studies through out the 60s and 70s were considered to be
classic support for the view that grammar teaching does nothing for
children's writing. Since the 1990's schools have reintroduced grammar in the form of
linguistics and many linguists have been able to contribute to grammar
in the National Curriculum. Upon delving into the essay question it can be noticed that the
subject matter is rather wide. For the purpose of this essay in order
to abstain from lengthening the paper it has been decided that certain
words should be clarified and hence accordingly discussed. Points that
need to be kept in mind have been listed below. a. To begin with, the question uses the word 'grammar', for the
purpose of this paper, in order to refrain from lengthening the paper;
we shall exclusively concentrate on the grammar of the English
language and at that as taught in schools in England. The history of
English grammar in schools situated in Wales and Northern Ireland has
been relatively different where as the education system in Scotland
has been totally independent in relation to England. It should also be
kept in mind that results of studies carried out abroad have been
included at times. b. Another issue which needs to be touched upon presently is regarding
the meaning of the wording in the question 'ability to write'. The
wording has two most obvious implications which I have listed below. 1. 'Ability to write' could mean good creative writing which would be
writing which is interesting, captivating and enjoyable but also open
to grammatical corrections. 2. The second understanding one could assume would be the development
of flawless English which is free from error and flows. It would also
be considered to be at times perhaps enjoyable and creative and at
times not. Structured Grammatical Exercises: Professor Richard Hudson says that structured grammatical analysis
where in which a child is taught grammar in a covert manner with less
usage of metalanguage and the teachers purposefully diverts from the
traditional teaching form of grammar most certainly benefits
children's writing.
In fact in some studies Hudson keenly points out that the overt method
of teaching grammar produces better results than the more traditional
teaching methods of grammatical analysis.
The Bullock Report The UK government's Bullock report in the 1960's on English teaching
was a classical study investigating the 'grammatical analysis'
approach to teaching grammar. The Bullock Report found that the
teaching of grammar needed some drastic changing it concluded: 'What
has been shown is that the teaching of traditional analytic grammar
does not appear to improve performance in writing. From the above it seems that the report was merely intending to encourage teachers to improve standards of grammar teaching rather
than end its' being taught. But with in the space of the next decade
rather than improving standards England saw a dramatic end of grammar
in English schools. People who are of an opinion which is anti-grammar forward the
argument that the Bullock report supports the move to the abolishment
of grammar. But when we look in to the Bullock report it can be seen
that is was more in favor of improving the teaching of grammar rather
than totally ending it. At the moment in the UK it can be said that there is a growing trend
showing that the teaching of grammar could improve writing standards.
This growing trend is most evident with the presence of grammar as
being one of the main pillars of the newly introduced National
Literacy and the National Curriculum for English. Hudson says, "one of the reasons given for this major change of teaching policy is the beneficial effect of grammar teaching
on the children's writing." Geoff Barton In the UK, Geoff Barton, a secondary school teacher with a training in
linguistic, reported (1998) that some of his weakest students benefit
'dramatically' from an exploration of simple compound and complex
sentence types. Mary Mason Mary Mason, a linguistically qualified teacher, designed a complete 3
year course in academic language for 12 to 14 year olds which now have
been taught over a number of years in several schools. The course improved writing skills dramatically. So which grammar is best? Hudson points out that studies regarding grammar have explored three
types of grammar, the traditional grammar, transformational grammar
and systematic grammar. Fundamentally it still remains unclear as to
which form of grammar is best. Many different researches have
suggested their own opinions regarding this but it still remains
debatable and open to scrutiny.
So with regards to the research material available regarding the
affects of grammar on the writing of children we can safely say that
the vast majority of such material is clearly indicative that some
sort of grammar in fact benefits the writings of children. Looking at the research evidence it seem that the actual content of
old fashioned grammar and the method of teaching was probably the main
problem why many studies that were undertaken by academics concluded
that grammar does not benefit language and writing skills. From the above it can be said that although there is a disagreement as
to which type of grammar is advantageous for children in enabling them
to write English but fundamentally the studies show that there is a
majority thinking that some sort of grammar is much better than none. An observation After having completed my secondary education in a comprehensive
school with no knowledge of grammar what so ever I, like many other
16-17 year olds embarked upon studying at the internationally
acclaimed seat of learning for traditional Islamic theology and
classical Arabic, Darul Uloom al-Arabiyyah al-Islamiyyah, Bury. Arabic was taught by learning Arabic grammar which involved learning
by rota, Nahw (syntax) and Sarf (morphology). Students would learn the
Arabic and Urdu texts of classical grammar manuscripts some of which
dated back to over a thousand years. Students were also required to
learn and inculcate in themselves the method of translating Arabic to
Urdu. Looking back at the course structure it now transpires that the
course never really emphasized writing Arabic, in fact one would
estimate that in the first three years of study (the course was a six
year study) students spent a mere hardly any time involved in creative
writing. But nevertheless out of the six former luminaries of Darul
Uloom who are presently at study undertaking the 3rd year English in
Education Module, 4 of them received As in their A level Classical
Arabic Examinations, an examination the vast part of which required
students to write stories in Arabic which as the syllabus stated was
supposed to be creative and free from error. The remaining two
students received a B and a C, marks clearly reflected the competence
of the students in their mastering of concepts of grammar. From the above it can be noticed that a mere strict and rigid study of
grammar where in which metalanguage does improve children's abilities
to write. Richard Hudson This top-down pressure for KAL was further increased by one of the
first steps taken by the new Labour government in 1997, the trial
introduction of the National Literacy Strategy (extended to all
primary schools in 1999). This is a highly focused programme for
raising reading and writing standards in primary schools (years 1 to
6); it was paired from the start with a National Numeracy Strategy,
and more recently it has fed into the English strand of a National
Strategy for years 7 to 9 in secondary school.[1] The government has
given this programme very high priority both in terms of publicity and
in terms of resources, so schools have been bombarded with guidance
and training materials and all serving teachers have had a certain
amount of training. Not surprisingly there has been some resistance,
but by and large the Literacy Strategy is accepted as part of primary
education, and most teachers seem to agree that its benefits outweigh
its weaknesses. During the first few years after it was introduced,
literacy standards improved dramatically before stabilising at a
higher level, but it is hard to separate the effects of KAL from all
the other changes that were introduced at the same time. Cont metalanguage yes Hudson In the world-wide debate about grammar teaching one of the main
questions concerns terminology: should the teacher use specialist
metalanguage? In the UK context this is not an issue: technical
terminology is accepted as a necessary part of explicit teaching.
Indeed, the documents that launched the National Literacy Strategy
included a glossary of 200 technical terms, of which about 90 related
to grammar. These are terms which teachers are expected to use in
class, and which children learn to use; so the UK's primary schools
are now full of five-year olds talking about phonemes and adjectives.
Since these documents had the official stamp of approval, this
glossary counts as the first-ever government-sponsored glossary of
grammatical terminology in the UK. The Bullock Report The UK government's Bullock report in the 1960's on English teaching
was a classical study and found that grammar teaching needed some
drastic changing. It concluded: 'What has been shown is that the
teaching of traditional analytic grammar does not appear to improve
performance in writing.'[6] (HMSO 1975:169) The Bullock Report was intending to encourage teachers to improve
standards of English grammar teaching but with in the space of the
next decade rather than improving standards England saw a dramatic end
of grammar in English schools. The article was produced by the member of masterpapers.com.

Applying for a Secured Loan 101
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_Kinley]James Kinley If youve made the decision to apply for a secured loan, youre likely to have done a bit of homework in regards of current interest rates, traditional fees for preparing the necessary documents, and of course, the fee your lender will charge you for your secured loan. If you have yet to accomplish the above tasks, you should at least begin the process before you begin to contact potential secured lenders. So heres a bit of basic info for you (and if youre already familiar with it, lets just consider it a refresher course, shall we?). The most common type of secured loan is a mortgage; one of the largest bills that you will ever have in your life. There are a wide variety of fees in all shapes, sizes and colors for you to decipher through, so be sure to pack your x-ray goggles! First things first, we have the APR its the amount that you will be paying each year for your loan. Also known as the Annual Percentage Rate, it will include the interest rate, fees, and certain other charges calculated on a yearly basis to come up with one complete percentage. Its usually a bit higher than the interest rate that youre quoted, as it includes the other fees. Be sure that you know the terms for fees as many of them can be hidden or covered up as something else. Points are one of the more popular fees, and can range in purpose to get you a lower interest rate to an honest loan officer telling you thats how hell fill his paypacket. When in doubt, ask questions! If youre not happy with the answers you received, ask someone else. Ask all the way up to the president of the company, as this is your money were talking about here. And dont sign anything that youre not 100% sure about. And last but not least, be sure to shop around- dont put all of your eggs into one proverbial basket, so to speak. There are, unfortunately quite a few bad loan originators (often referred to in the industry as predators) in the secured loan industry that are completing the old Bait and Switch routine on you- promising the moon and stars to you, their special client, but all the while they have no such program waiting for you (and you are now in a difficult position: either choose the horrid loan program that you got switched into, or no loan at all). By shopping around, and informing the competing lenders that they are not alone, you are setting yourself up for an ideal, winning secured loan situation. When the application process commences, its very important to remember that you can change your mind at any time without penalty or fine. Sometimes our gut instinct tells us something that we just cant avoid, and its often best to listen to our gut James Kinley recommends Accepted.co.uk for [http://www.accepted.co.uk]secured loans. You Have to Probe Deeper: Why First Impressions Are Dangerous
By Azriel Winnett Do you remember when, as a small child at a birthday party, you sat wide-eyed and gaping as a magician pulled out a rabbit with a flourish from a seemingly empty top hat?
At the time, the wonder of it all left you speechless and full of awe, but like all healthy children, you grew a little wiser as you grew a little older.
The next time you were present at such a performance, the "magician" might have turned into a "conjurer." You might have enjoyed the show every bit as much, but you now knew that sleight of hand, not black magic, was the name of the game.
It's a great pity that when we finally emerge into adulthood, we tend to forget what we learned about those crafty conjurers who entertained us in our youth.
Yes, our intellects may have matured greatly over the years. But for all that, we don't draw enough on our youthful understanding of the "sleight of hand" concept to make further logical distinctions along the same lines.
More specifically, and simply put, we often don't appreciate enough that things are not always what they're cracked up to be!
The end result is that we fall prone to a kind of mental laziness that allows us to accept everything that bombards our senses at face value, without probing deeper. At times, we may even regress so much that we are still viewing life's events as the small child views his first magician show.
It's not only little toddlers at birthday parties whose mind's are deceived. If you're at all human (and who isn't), it may happen to you almost very day.
A woman was once riding on a subway train when six exceptionally boisterous children burst into the carriage and plunked themselves down on a seat near her. Almost automatically, the woman cringed. She wondered how she would survive the rest of the journey.
Then a few seconds later a gentleman stepped into the coach, trudged in a rather lethargic manner over to the children, and sighing deeply, sat down next to them. The woman relaxed a little. He must be their father, and undoubtedly he would keep the young brats in order.
But to her consternation, the five kids didn't let up in their wild exuberance for a second. They continued to jump up and down and race around the coach, yelling their little lungs out all the while, while the father just sat there in almost a trance-like state, as if deep in a meditation exercise.
Finally, our lady passenger could tolerate this no longer. She went over to the father and berated him in the strongest language she could command for not exerting himself to control his insufferable children.
"Yes, you're right," he acknowledged very softly, his voice almost choking. "They really should behave with more consideration. We're just now returning from the hospital, where their mother died two hours ago..."
This widespread human failing - of neglecting to look below the surface - is the root cause of much of the misery that people inflict both on themselves and upon others. It leads to hasty judgments and overly superficial evaluations that wreak havoc with all kinds of social relationships.
The inclination to pass hasty judgment on the actions of our peers is indeed an all too human one. Inevitably it leads to feelings of resentment and other powerful emotions, none of which are too good for either our physical or emotional health. More significantly, our tendency to jump to conclusions must obviously lead to negative consequences regarding our relationship with the person or people concerned.
This is especially true when our suspicions turn out to be unfounded, or the people had valid reasons for behaving as they did. And this happens more frequently than any of us would care to admit. We forget that we are often in a position of someone who starts a novel at chapter three!
Practical exercises
So what are we going to do about it? Each one of us is as human as the next person. Can we really change our inborn natures?
Yes, we certainly can! Surely nothing worthwhile comes easy, but change is well within our ability. And I can prove it to you. Do you know how?
When it comes to judging our own selves, we all suddenly have a remarkable capacity to judge favorably. When we are say, late for an appointment or forget to keep a promise, we're usually not slow in finding excuses for ourselves. After all, we have so much on our mind or are working under such stress. (Of course, when another does the same to us, we find no justification for such rudeness, ingratitude or inconsideration!)
And if we can be lenient with ourselves, we can train ourselves to be lenient with others as well. It's a matter of practice - analogous to excercising a weak muscle to strengthen it.
We can kill the habit of looking only at the surface by training ourselves to give our family, friends and colleagues the benefit of the doubt, in all sorts of situations that come up in daily life. Here are a couple of examples:
You arrange to meet your friend downtown for coffee at a certain time. You wait and wait, but she doesn't show up. From the window during the bus journey home, you see her strolling casually down the street. The expected phone call of apology also doesn't materialize.
Think of possible valid reasons for your friend's seemingly inexplicable conduct. Perhaps she misunderstood the date or time you arranged? Perhaps what looked like a casual stroll from the fast moving bus was really a rush to an emergency? Perhaps her phone is out of order?
You have an ongoing ailment and you have to report weekly at the clinic for a certain medical test. Usually, the nurse in charge hands you the result on the spot. This time, a new nurse is on duty. She declines to tell you the result, citing official policy that only a doctor can give it to you at a prearranged appointment. You're fuming, because you know no one gives a hoot for official policy at this clinic.
Consider that this time the test result might not be exactly what you were hoping it would be, but the nurse wasn't sure whether she was interpreting it correctly. Perhaps she had been loathe to upset you - possibly for nothing - until she had checked with the doctor. More likely than not, this is what actually happened!
A final tip: here's one technique to help you feel positive even to people who annoy you. When somebody does something that makes you mad, don't start cursing or thinking to yourself "What a horrible pest!"
Close your eyes for a moment, either physically or mentally. Try to imagine that person as a baby. Conjure up in your mind an image of that person's mother, taking up that baby in her arms with feelings of joy and unqualified love.
Now, close your eyes tighter and try to feel a little bit of that love.

Cure Your Problems With Herbal Medicine
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_Penn] James Penn Plants have traditionally been a major and the earliest source of medicine for people around the world. As the knowledge of healing propensities of plants was being accumulated in societies, people started to produce different extracts, oils, juices, solutions made from different roots, leaves, fruits of various plants. Throughout the millennia, herbal medicine, or physiotherapy, developed a wide range of medicines for a variety of purposes. Some treated wounds, others exerted revitalizing effects, still others targeted infections. Herbal supplements were both taken orally and used externally. The ancient knowledge of the medical effects is so advanced that our modern science has to revisit the traditional recipes repeatedly, all the time discovering new, almost miraculous, herb propensities. Not only did the ancient cultures discover those healing properties of the plants, they also learnt how to keep the medicines fresh and effective throughout the year by protecting them from sunset, humidity, and high temperatures. The herb St. Johns Wort, for instance, has been known, under different names, since very old times for its healing propensities. This plant is a rich source of choline, pectin, pseudohypericin found in both the flower and leaves. Those components possess a number of valuable qualities, - analgesic, antiseptic, also helping digestive processes. The plant is reported to possess certain anti-depressant qualities, and some studies indicate that certain elements found in it are useful in combating AIDS. Other plants, like the Chamomile flower, are widely used as aromatizers, as tea additives, but also have the propensities of promoting wounds healing. In measured qualities the extracts of the Chamomile flower can be quite useful for those suffering from disturbed sleep. Another useful herb is Feverfew whose leaves are rich in parthenolide. Soothing effects of Feverfew extracts have been used for a long time; it is said to relive headaches, toothaches, pains in joints, and other conditions. Can You Actually Fail A Personality Quiz?
By Brian Fong Q. I didn't get a job that I interviewed for. The employer told me that I had "failed" the personality quiz. How is that possible? Does this mean that I have no personality? A. "Fail" is a pretty strong word when it comes to taking a personality quiz. In fact, it is so strong that it makes me wonder about the professionalism of the potential employer that administered the personality quiz to you. There is no pass/fail in a personality quiz; especially an employment personality quiz. There are simply factors that are important to the employer that either are, or are not, present in your personality. To say that you "failed" the personality quiz is a misnomer. You simply did not have some personality traits that the employer deemed important for the particular job that you applied for. Other than the fact that they insulted you, they probably did you a favor by giving you that personality quiz. By screening you out based upon a certain personality profile, they saved you from accepting a job that you would probably have ended up hating and leaving after a short while. A personality quiz is an interesting animal. There are actually many different types. You've already encountered a pre-employment personality quiz, but that's not the only type out there. Before we go off into the subject of a personality quiz, it's important that we agree upon the definition of the term personality. Let's keep it short: Your personality consists of all the traits and behaviours that make you unique and that determine how you are likely to act in any given situation. Given that this definition is true, then a personality quiz is designed to measure those traits and to quantify them into some meaningful profile that enables someone to predict how you will behave. Is that really possible? Yes, in most instances it is possible to accurately how someone is LIKELY to behave under a given set of circumstances. The key word here is LIKELY. We've all seen or read about people who have exhibited extraordinary acts of heroism who were otherwise thought of as a most unlikely hero due to being timid, shy, young, or whatever. It is not possible to totally predict anyone's behaviour no matter how sophisticated a test is or how educated the person who designed it was. While the pre-employment personality quiz is designed to match candidates with job vacancies and predict the likelyhood of that candidate thriving in that particular business' culture, there are also other types of personality quiz that are used for other purposes. Closely aligned to the pre-employment personality quiz is the promotion candidate personality quiz. A quiz of this type is designed to match the personality of an existing employee, who is being considered for promotion, to the type pf personality that is needed to survive in the position for which there is a vacancy. A relationship personality quiz is designed to test the compatibility factors between two people. It measures those traits that have been determined to promote a long term relationship. There is also a type pf personality quiz that measures a person's sanity. It is typically used by the legal system to determine if someone is "legally insane" and can be held accountable for their actions in a court of law. And then there is the personality quiz that is designed for entertainment purposes only. These are typically found in magazines and are developed by writers for the sole purpose of amusing their readership if not for simply filling pages. You shouldn't put too much weight on your scores for this type of personality quiz. The questions are rarely scientific and there is no sense getting your panties in a wad over something that has no real merit. As far as the "scientific" personality quiz is concerned, none of them are 100% accurate and a skilled quiz taker, or a pathological lier, can skew a personality quiz to meed their own purposes. Like anything else that can't be seen, touched, or smelled, take these personality quiz results with a grain of salt. ----------------------------------------------------------------

Getting the Maximum Marketing Mileage Out of Your Nametag
By Scott Ginsberg As a small business owner, you must always explore creative ways to promote your products or services. One of the most effective yet underappreciated tools you can use to keep your company on stage is your nametag. Especially when you attend meetings, events or if youre out in the field representing your company, your nametag is your best friend. Not only will it remind people of your name (who will forget your name 10 seconds after they shake your hand anyway), but it will advertise your business. Think of your nametag as your own personal billboard. And with that in mind, follow these steps get the maximum marketing mileage out of your nametag. Create a Custom Nametag
If youre a small business owner or entrepreneur and you dont have your own custom nametag, you are missing out. Imagine you attend your Chamber of Commerce meeting and you get stuck wearing the obligatory, computerized, faded-font, barely-sticks-onto-my-lapel Avery piece of junk. You will not stand out. You will not promote your business. And other members will not know who you are or how you can give them value. Try this: at your next meeting, sit by someone in real estate those people know how to wear nametags! If you want a professional nametag that will effectively brand you and your business, consider a small investment in custom engraving. I once started a conversation and made friends with a lady at a meeting of the National Speakers Association because she had the biggest, most beautifulnametagthat I had ever seen! She then told me the name of the St. Peters company who customized her nametag and I drove out to their shop that day! For more information, go to Incredible Engravings at www.engravings.com. Stay On Duty All the Time
What frustrates you more? Someone whose name youve forgotten or someone whose nametag isnt available to help you remember their name? People have a tendency to remove their nametags when they eat, smoke, use the bathroom, go to break out sessions or attend pre/post show activities. Dont. Leave your nametag on for the entire meeting. You never know when there will be a new member in attendance who doesnt know who you are. Remember, as the great sales trainer Jeffery Gitomer says, Its not who you know, its who knows you. Think of yourself as a taxi driver. If you cruise down the street and you want to attract customers, dont shut off your on duty lights. Be available at all times for the people who need your services. Because you never know around which corner your next customer will be standing! Your Nametag is Your Brand
All billboards for McDonalds have similar components: the golden arches, the food, the lifestyle images, the slogans, etc. They are consistent because effective advertising campaigns coordinate their branding efforts between mediums. Therefore, since your nametag is just like your own billboard, the font, color, logo and company information that appears on your nametag should be consistent with the existing brand of your business. As a result, when people meet you, look into your eyes and then look at your nametag, everything will synergize together as one valuable entity. A great example of someone who uses a nametag as a branding tool is my friend Tom Terrific. Tom is a speaker, trainer and coach whose company is called Terrific Presentations. Not only do his name, company and programming revolve around the word terrific, but his nametag simply says, Tom Terrific. And nobody ever seems to forget Tom. Why? Because hes terrific and he has the nametag to prove it! Be an Ambassador
Your nametag will immediately identify you as an ambassador of your company. As such, it will hold you accountable for your behavior while you wear it. Your nametag is like a logo shirt it should be the personification of your companys culture. So wear it proudly. It will help you maintain a consistency between your performance and the mission of your business. My friend Bob, who is a Financial Representative for Northwestern Mutual, wears his shiny, sleek, silver nametag on the lapel of his elegant suit every day. It looks professional and meticulous. And just like his nametag, Bob is professional and meticulous. Bob is elegant. Now that is an example of how to be an ambassador. Silly Is As Silly Does
I know, I know - nametags are silly and annoying. They ruin your clothes. They diminish your anonymity. They draw unwanted attention to certain areas of your body. But, what if you wore a beautiful, customized nametag that differentiated you? What ifyour nametag offered a small amount of personal information that made you more approachable? And what if everyone knew you and how you could help them? Then, the only people who would look silly would be those who werent connecting and engaging with each other the people who werent getting the maximum marketing mileage out of their nametags. LET ME ASK YA THIS...

Health Discussion about Weight Loss
By Lambert Klein You may have read about a case in London where an eight year old boy, weighing 200 pounds, was in jeopardy of being taken away by social workers. As it turns out, they decided not to take this boy away from his mom. What caused the social workers to even consider this outrageous move? Apparently, the young mans diet is largely made up of junk food. Because London offers universal care to all, they determine that they had a legal duty to step in if it suspects a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. As of this past Tuesday, however, an agreement was reached on how he should be cared for. The mother did consult a dietician, but her son still put on the pounds. She commented, He takes food out of the fridge the minute you turn your back. Moreover, she also revealed we have the moods and the tantrums and the slamming the doors. Unfortunately, if the child continues in this path, according to doctors, he will face an early death. Here is the question for discussion: Should anyone, in any country, be allowed to take a child out of the home because he is overweight? If, indeed, the child had been taken, what precedent would have been set? Would children who have anger management problems be removed; would a child who listens to music or doesnt conform to what others consider proper standards be removed? What about the childs civil rights? While one could play devils advocate and say that, yes, since London provides healthcare for all its citizens, then it has every right to interfere in a childs well-being if that childs health is in decline. And yes, with healthcare costs rising, it is cost-effective to see to it that everyone is following a health protocol to prevent disease. It seems contradictory, at the very least, that social services fails to remove children being abused, but jump at the chance to remove a child who is overweight. Social services, no where they operate, have failed our children. Here in our own country, hundreds of children have died as a result of poor management and follow-up. Joel Steinberg is one such man who abused and killed a little girl because she was in the way of his having a good time. He was an abuser; and nothing was done to remove the child from the home. Instead of thinking about overweight children, which is a parents responsibility, it is social services that need to show more responsibility in dealing with children who are abused first and foremost. What are your thoughts on this subject? How would you, as a parent, deal with a morbidly obese child? Let's hear what you have to say. Welcome to

Wedding Save-the-Date Cards - A Complete Guide
By Cori Locklin Although save-the-dates are not absolutely necessary, these cards have increased in popularity with the rise of destination weddings and modern guest lists spread throughout the country. Since they are a relatively modern concept, no real rules apply - a fact which sometimes causes confusion for brides when planning their wedding stationery. I've sorted through the information that's out there to bring you the real ins and outs concerning save-the-dates Who Needs them?
If your guest list includes a number of out-of-towners, or if your wedding takes place during a holiday or other peak time, you are a prime candidate for save-the-dates. Since invitations don't go out until 6-8 weeks before the big day, save-the-dates are the perfect way to give wedding guests a preliminary heads up so they can begin making travel arrangements. These days, however, more and more brides send these cards regardless of the time and location of their wedding. Why? Save-the-dates provide a fun opportunity to get the word out and foreshadow the style of your big event. Rules & Etiquette
Again, few rules apply. The only information you must include is your names and wedding date, although I suggest including location information as well so wedding guests can begin their travel plans. Aim to send save-the-date cards soon after you secure your date and venue, or about 4-6 months prior to your wedding. Remember, everyone who receives a save-the-date also receives an invitation, so have your guest list finalized prior to sending them. You can, however, always add guests later (there is no rule that says everyone must receive a save-the-date card). Although formal replies are not required, you can get preliminary attendance estimates through word-of-mouth. Trends & Ideas
These cards will be the first impression of your wedding festivities, so take advantage of this opportunity to build excitement amongst your wedding guests. If you already know the colors and/or theme of your wedding, now's your chance to provide a sneak peak. Or try including a favorite love poem or quote that symbolizes your relationship. Here are some of my favorite ideas and trends: Use vibrant colors that will "pop" as soon as guests open the envelope. Incorporate graphics that correspond with the season and/or location of your event. If you are planning a fall wedding, try including colorful leaves, or include seashells for a wedding on the water. If the timing is right, turn your save-the-date cards into holiday greetings. Incorporate your engagement photo or another photo taken shortly after the proposal. Who says they have to be printed stationery? Set yours apart by turning them into scrolls, pens, stickers, magnets or a creative calendar-marker. You are only limited by your imagination! Wording Samples
The content of your save-the-dates should be short, sweet, and to the point - providing a basic who, what, where and when. There is no standard wording; they may be as formal or as whimsical as you'd like. In any case, make sure to include "Formal invitation to follow" somewhere on the card. Here is the basic layout for the save-the-date cards: Save the Date: [bride & groom's name] are getting married on [wedding date] in [city, state] Here are some wording samples you might want to consider: Traditional: Please save the date: May 4, 2006 for the wedding of Bob & Judy in Charleston, South Carolina Fun & Cutesy: We're Tying The Knot! John popped the question, and Katie said yes. Please join us on October 2, 2006 Orange County, California For a destination wedding: Please join us in paradise on June 17, 2006 when Lisa & Jay say "I Do" in Maui, Hawaii For a complete guide to creating an elegant and memorable wedding celebration, visit http://www.elegala.com, your ultimate wedding planning resource.

Relationship - Have You Forgotten Your Desires To Keep Your Partner Happy?
By CD Mohatta I used to paint when I was young. I was a dancer. I loved hiking. I loved outdoor sports and so it goes on. I used to be is the common theme. I have forgotten about all that, because my partner does not like that? Or our relationship much more demand? Or my partner demands more than I do? Or my partner does not care about my hobbies? Many relationships destroy a person's desires. This problem has to be looked at from the point of both the partners. Women are anyway expected to give up more to look after family. If her husband is callous about her satisfaction of doing what she wants the situation becomes worse for her. Many budding talents are not allowed to grow because of the sacrifice their relationship demands. This depends on the partner's attitude. If the partner understands, he/she will find ways to help other realize the dreams and fulfill desires. If the partner is self-centered, this will not happen. There is another major dimension to this problem. Those who bury their desires deep inside some black hole don't show their dissatisfaction. They take it as a matter of life. But it is not that. Once they begin telling assertively about their desires, their partner would have to wake up and find ways. What is required most is not silent acceptance, but assertive action. Every human being needs some freedom. Many of us envy birds, butterflies and other creatures that roam around with total freedom. We don't have that freedom. That hurts our inner being. We have to ourselves reclaim our freedom. The author, C.D.Mohatta writes for screen savers and desktop wallpapers at http://www.screene.com/ on topics like nature, spirituality, motivation, love, holidays, animals, etc. He also writes fun quizzes and fun tests at http://www.funquizcards.com/ on topics like love, personality, dating, relationships, friendship, movies, tv, music, business, etc. The third site, the author writes for, is http://www.ecarduniverse.com/ - it has free ecards on holidays, birthday, love, friendship, family, expressions, celebrations and all events and occasions. Organic Solutions For Pest Control
By Anne Clarke Many people shy away from organic gardening because they believe that their plants will become infested by insects if they do not spray them with the correct poisons. The truth is, there are plenty of natural ways to keep bugs off of your plants that is, there are lots of ways to keep the bad bugs off while attracting the good ones. Garlic. We all know that garlic keeps away vampires, but did you know that it also keeps annoying insects like aphids out of your garden? You can create your own insect spray by crushing the cloves. Also, plant a sprouting garlic in the garden to act as an additional repellent. Allium Family. Other stinky plants besides garlic, like onions, chives, and scallions also repel pests. Plant these throughout your garden. Fennel. Attract those beautiful ladybugs by planting this wonderful herb. Remember, ladybugs will kill spider mites and aphids, but they will not hurt plants, people, or pets. Compared to chemical pesticides, ladybugs are much less expensive, and they are self-renewing! Other herbs. Dill, cilantro, angelica, and parsley attract ladybugs to your gardens, too. They also attract other beneficial insects. Praying Mantis. A praying mantis can be the answer to your prayers or they can become a bit of a pest, themselves. This insect is a very hungry one, all to happy to eat aphids, fruit flies, grasshoppers, moths, crickets, and house flies but that is not all that they eat. They also tend to eat those beneficial insects like lacewings and hover flies. It is possible to buy cases of praying mantis eggs, if you want to include this hungry insect in your garden. Organic sprays. If adding insects to your garden is not your idea of the best way to get rid of insects, there are some organic sprays that you can use (like neem or pyrethrum). You can also set out sticky traps. Maintain proper soil fertility. Start with the soil use proper waste handling methods as well as good compost methods. Plant a diverse ecosystem (of native species). By maintaining proper soil fertility, you will repel pests, weeds, and fungus. The type of pest control that you decide to use depends greatly on the type of pest that you have flies, grasshoppers, fungus gnats, leafminers, leafhoppers, crickets, caterpillars, aphids, bean beetles, etc. The list of insect pest seems to go and on. Luckily, there are some beneficial insects to combat them! Overall, it is a good idea to invite green lacewings, ladybugs, and praying mantis to your garden. Find ways to attract them, or go out and buy them and bring them by force to your garden! Besides using insects as pest control, there are plenty of traps and organic pesticides that you can use. Why not try these out first, before you try out pesticides that can be harmful to the environment? Anne Clarke writes numerous articles for websites on gardening, parenting, fashion, and home decor. Her background includes teaching and gardening. For more of her articles on gardening and pest control, please visit Gardening Answers. 10 Tips For Writing A Winning Resume
By Shaun Fawcett Your resume (or curriculum vitae), combined with the cover
letter, are the master keys to opening the prospective
employer's mind and door so that you can proceed to the
next step in the process - the big interview! RESUME WRITING TIPS AND STRATEGIES Here are 10 valuable tips for anyone writing their own
resume, or who is having someone else write one for them.
These tips and strategies are an abridged version of what
is contained in my new eBook, "Instant Home Writing Kit". 1. Keep It Focused and Businesslike A resume should be specific and all business. Don't try to
be too smart or too cute. After all, you are asking an
employer to invest significant time and money by choosing
you over many other similarly qualified people. Employers
mainly want to know whether you are appropriately qualified
and experienced, and if you have the ability to "deliver
the goods." 2. More Than Two Pages Is Too Much For students, recent graduates, or people with just a few
years of experience, try to keep your resume to one page,
two as an absolute maximum. Even a resume for someone with
20 years or more of extensive working experience, should
not exceed three pages. In some cases, one or two "optional"
pages can be referred to as "available upon request." These
would be such optional annexes as a list of references or
an inventory of recent projects and/or publications. 3. Get The Words and Punctuation Right Make sure the grammar, spelling, and punctuation in your
resume are perfect. Any obvious mistakes will hurt your
credibility. Also, be sure to keep the language clear and
simple. If you draft it yourself, have someone with
excellent writing skills do an editorial review and a
careful proofread of it. If a professional prepares it for
you, such reviews are the responsibility of the resume
preparation firm. Use an accepted English language "style
guide" if you want to be sure of the finer points of word
usage, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, etc. 4. Read Between The Lines Customize the resume to match the stated requirements of
the job that you are applying for, without being misleading.
Review and analyze the job advertisement carefully. Look
for and itemize the key qualifications, skills, and
abilities the employer is seeking. Then identify certain
key words that are usually repeated in such ads. Make sure
that the wording and sequence of points in your resume
reflect and address these "corporate terminologies" and
"code words" as much as possible. When possible, study the
company's annual report and Web site, and weave the themes
and terms found there into your resume and cover letter. 5. Make Sure It Looks Good Use a crisp, clean, simple presentation format for a
professional looking resume. Just a bit of simple line work
and/or shading, done with standard word processing software
will do the trick. If you don't have the aptitude for this,
there is most likely someone among your friends or in your
office who can help you achieve a professional presentation.
If not, seek professional advice. It won't cost much for a
good simple layout, but it will make a world of difference
to the product. 6. Show What You Can Do Today Focus, first and foremost, on your recent experience that
is most relevant to the position at hand. Less relevant
and/or dated experience should be either eliminated or
summarized in brief point form near the end of your resume.
When reviewing your resume information, a prospective
employer wants to know what you are doing now, what you
have done recently, and how that relates to the job
requirements of the post they are trying to fill. 7. Be A Straight-Shooter Be completely honest. When people lie or "creatively
exaggerate" on their resume, they are almost invariably
exposed, sooner or later. Think about it - who really
wants to get a job based on a lie(s) and then have to live
in fear of eventually being found out? We often read in the
newspaper about high-profile folks who get caught in a
resume falsehood or exaggeration, and it isn't very pretty. 8. Follow The Instructions Submit your resume in exactly the form that the prospective
employer requests. If they say e-mail or fax is okay, do it
that way. However, if they ask for it by regular mail, send
it the way they ask. They must have reasons for requesting
it in such a form and they are geared up to process it that
way. If your resume is to be sent by snail mail, use the
complete address that they specify, or it could go to the
wrong office, especially in a large organization. 9. Don't Get Lost In The Mail Be careful to respect certain conventions that the potential
employer may require in your resume. For example, make sure
that the cover letter mentions the exact name of the
specific position you are applying for, and the competition
number, if applicable. Sometimes an employer will request
that the job title and/or number be printed on the outside
of the envelope. You would not want to miss out on a job
because you didn't follow minor administrative requirements. 10. Keep The Cover Short and Focused In the cover letter, don't repeat what is already detailed
in the body of the attached resume. It is a "cover" letter.
It should be short and to the point. Introduce yourself
first, and then briefly summarize why you believe that you
have the qualifications and experience to fulfill the
duties of the position better than anyone else. Express
enthusiasm about the job and the company. Close by stating
how you are looking forward to hearing more from them soon,
and that you will follow-up if necessary. The above list can be used as a "checklist" both during
the preparation phase, and when reviewing your resume just
before submission. To see a fully-formatted "real-life template" of a resume,

Engagement Party Ideas To Wow The Crowd!
By Alex Miller He's proposed, and most likely you're flashing your new engagement ring. Now it's time to plan the celebration, but where do you start? Your engagement party is the perfect setting for the families and friends of the bride and groom to meet each other if they haven't already done so. Make yourself available at the start of the event to greet all your guests and introduce everyone. Mingle as much as possible so that your guests feel comfortable and relaxed. You can celebrate in style with a swanky black-tie cocktail party, or a formal sit-down dinner, or maybe a casual serve-yourself buffet is more your style. Whatever you choose, remember that many of your guests may not know each other so you want them to be able to mingle comfortably. Once upon a time, engagement parties were usually held at the home of the bride's parents, but nowadays most couples like to host their own engagement party. If you want to go all out, you can hire a banquet hall with full catering, a local hall or you could set up a marquee in your own back yard. The choices are only limited by your imagination (and wallet!) Engagement Party Themes Many couples like to choose a theme for their engagement party. Having a theme party helps break the ice with your guests and generally adds an element of frivolity the occasion. You can choose a 50s, 60s or 70s party, depending on the decade in which you were born, or an Hawaiian or Mexican party for something more exotic. If you prefer, the theme can be as simple as your choice of colors or the style of your decorations. For a 50s, 60s or 70s retro look, decorate with lime green, purple, hot pink and yellow. If you'd like to go Hawaiian choose lots of bright greens, yellow and blue. For a Mexican theme, choose gold, purple and blue and have a pinata filled with candies for a bit of fun. For a romantic theme, choose pastel colors and use tulle or organza to drape the tables, chair backs, stair railings and ceiling. Scatter rose petals and sparkles on the tables and light the area with twinkling fairy lights. Candles add a soft glow to your surroundings and can be used in a number of interesting and inventive ways. Party and theme shops have a fabulous array of party items and props you can buy or hire for the night. You can check out your local shopping mall, or go online for the most wonderful array of balloons, streamers, party poppers, confetti, and candles. Engagement Party Entertainment Entertainment always seems to enhance the mood at a party, although it's not a necessity. A quality sound system and some lively CDs are certainly enough to raise the spirits of party-goers. If your budget allows, you can hire a pianist or a string quartet to provide pleasant background music. If you'd prefer something a little livelier, how about hiring a juke-box, a DJ or maybe you'd prefer a mariachi band? Or you could hire a karaoke machine and invite your guests to contribute to the entertainment! Set aside an area for dancing, then start everyone off with a special dance for the newly engaged couple. It will help prepare you for the wedding waltz! Your choice of entertainment should match the tone and theme of the party, so make sure you choose the kind of entertainment that appeals to your tastes and makes you feel comfortable. These days anything goes when it comes to engagement party ideas, so let your imagination soar and create a memorable experience, both for you as a couple and for your guests. Just remember to make it a fun-filled and happy experience and above all, enjoy yourselves!
